Andy Crooks brings nearly four decades of industry experience to the world of building control. He is a seasoned leader committed to shaping industry standards and ensuring the highest levels of safety and compliance.

Andy’s journey began in 1990 with Local Authority Building Control, where he built a solid foundation, working as a Specialist Inspector to Building Control Manager before transitioning to the private sector in 2007.

As Chief Executive, Andrew was instrumental in steering his Approved Inspector through significant growth, leading strategic direction, compliance, risk management, and technical services to meet the industry’s evolving demands.

His focus is on ensuring legal and administrative compliance, and in April 2024, he played a key role in securing his most recent employer’s Registered Building Control Approver status.

Not only a leader but Andy is also a mentor and advocate for the future of building control. He is an Assessor for Total Training and Development’s Building Control Competency Assessment (BCCA) route. His work as an Auditor, Chairman, and Assessor for the RICS APC, as well as an Assessor for the CABE membership team, and his involvement in policy and audit committees with CICAIR/HSE showcase his commitment to raising industry standards.

From the very small to the very large, Andy has worked as an inspector on all building types across the built environment. Andrew is professionally qualified as a Chartered Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers, and his qualification as a corporate member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Andy is a registered Specialist Building Inspector (Classes 3G and H) and Building Control Technical Manager (Class 4).

Co-author of the 14th edition of The Building Regulations Explained & Illustrated (Wiley Blackwell, 2017), Andy is collaborating on the 15th edition, due for release in 2025. The latest release will help students and professionals understand the building control environment and their responsibilities.

Andy is the co-founder of DHA Fire Stopping Limited, a successful company specialising in passive fire protection, fire safety engineering, and complex building risk assessments.

His diverse experience further strengthens his ability to approach building control from a holistic, safety-first perspective.

Passionate about the built environment and its future, Andy frequently presents on technical and legal topics for industry associations, professional institutions, and clients. He focuses on ensuring compliance, advancing safety protocols, and driving innovation across the building control landscape.
